Value of communication

It is a common sight to see people conversing with each other, something also known as Interpersonal Communication which can be easily described by the standard SMCR model which is: Sender-Message-Channel-Receiver.

This standard model suggests that for any message to be conveyed from one person to another has to have a channel to go through. Interpersonal Communication is a bare necessity of Human Beings which is one of the reasons why we started to communicate in the first place.

Humans started to use speech to communicate thoughts or when in need of help etcetera. A conversation is the resultant of interpersonal communication between two people and it has etiquettes. The mentioning of etiquettes is because it correlates with the fact that only a person who practices interpersonal communication knows such etiquettes of communication.

Sometimes a few people have a strong connection with themselves also known as Intrapersonal communication. The motive behind the mentioning of intrapersonal communication is that it can also have a dash of negativity to it as well commonly known as Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a mental disorder in which a person likes to sulk in their room and refrain from communication with family members or peers at school. Usually it is present among the young people such as school going kids or even students in a university.

According to a source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001925/ (you may also find other information regarding schizophrenia)

“Childhood-onset schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder that makes it difficult to:
  • Tell the difference between real and unreal experiences
  • Think logically
  • Have normal emotional responses,
  • Behave normally in social situations”
Sometimes when people suffer with certain mental disorders life is twice as more difficult for them and to top it off, for them, it is hard to recognize that there is an obstacle of mental disorder between them and the rest of the society. They often fail to communicate with others hence have poor interpersonal communication skills. While the SMCR model in this regard turns out to be a complete failure as the sender fails to send their message to the receiver.

The medical treatment includes medicines or group therapy but the main focus is to let the person come out of their shell. A person who has a difficulty adjusting in a class sometimes suffer from such a disorder not to mention such people are very easy to indicate because they suffer in silence, they might have  a problem but do not complain etcetera and these people are more prone to being bullied or even harassed as they seem to be an easy bait due to the reason that they are alone mostly.

Hence the only solution to this problem is to help such people come out of their shell. Not only does the interpersonal communication play an important role in treating such people, the intrapersonal communication also plays a part. Because only the sufferer knows what they are going through and that they must speak their heart out no matter how much their disorder makes them feel guilty or regret it later, the exhilaration that is caused by speaking and standing up for one’s self is irreplaceable.

It can be said that it is a common sight to see a group of individuals talking and communicating while a very rare sight to see someone sulking in a crowd. Keeping in our minds that they might find it difficult to communicate we must approach such people and be approachable instead of criticizing them and single them out which in turn will worsen the survival for such people.
