On a serious note

I think that working in media is for the tough ones because one is very much exposed to the negativity and not to mention life threatening situations. This happens not just with the jobs related to the media, any job that promises a good salary package comes with many risks. However, people who work for media become a public property such as actors, politicians, journalists, writers etc and they are far more exposed to the outside world than any other profession because media can instantly give popularity to someone or an issue.

Media either print or electronic is basically a platform for those who are professionals as well as general public to share whatever they know or whatever they find out by reporting or researching, sometimes though, some information can never be given out such as the JFK case which can be further explained by Oliver Stone's 1991 film JFK closed with the following message:

“A Congressional Investigation from 1976-1979 found a "probable conspiracy" in the assassination of John F. Kennedy and recommended the Justice Department investigate further. As of 1991, the Justice Department has done nothing. The files of the House Select Committee on Assassinations are locked away until the year 2029.”

An example from Pakistan which can be Zia-Ul-Haq’s plane crash or Benazir Bhutto assassination, there are still a few mysteries, remnants of information that prove that still media has to stop at one point or another.

Then sometimes media bombs away with the most controversial taboos and truths that shock their audience and in return cause higher ratings for a show. Why is this rating such a huge deal anyway? Here is why:

The more a show is watched, the more advertisement is pumped into that show. It does not matter what content is shown on the show, anything that attracts a specific audience such as audience from a specific age group, gender, race etc, whatever causes more people to watch a show is big money for advertisers.

There are many shows and movies that are watched for the purpose of entertainment and not to follow the content that is shown on the show (excluding the Indian sagas and daughter-in-law, mother-in-law cat fights which some take literally) which is essential to mention in this blog hoping that I do not become a killjoy.

Every profession has a discipline that sticks to it like a fly to a fly paper and it should be taken into account especially when a huge audience is involved. Anyone can talk about ethics and principles but what is important is how the credo is maintained, how the set principles have been taken into consideration so talking about something is different and easy while doing something about it is a formidable act.

Any channel can come up with a Jerry Springer show which has a specific target audience and high ratings, which not to mention also come with a warning. What is different is when a channel sends its employees on serious missions that also pose risk to life such as what journalists do when they are sent to embed a war struck country such as Anthony Shadid died of asthma in Syria reporting the Arab Spring or Joao Silva who died when he stepped on a land mine in Afghanistan.

There are not so many local heroes like the journalists above who died embedding the conflict zones of the world, very few are brave to do so, to go out in the field and die for a purpose. Or what about the refugees such as the Children who make chocolate out of cocoa in Africa, they do not get to eat the chocolate that they make rather they get paid with little amount of money. Or those refugees who, in search for their identities, end up getting killed and their organs getting sold for thousands of dollars, they do not even get a proper burial in a graveyard rather, they get buried outside across the walls.

The point is without the audience, without the viewers, there is not a single show on earth that can pass in order to be showed on regular bases. The people are the ones who take one show from an unsuccessful point to a successful one. Basically, it is us who choose the content of the show and become buyers of the product that is shown in the ads.  We are the money generators and it is up to us whether to choose a saga based on domestic (self-generated) problems, or a CNN Freedom Project etc. No matter what happens, wars, killings or the Oscars, the people will be the one that would want to know about all of the aforementioned which as a result will automatically cause the big owners to make shows with such content. This is just one side of the story, a biased opinion of an ignorant reader of news and not a viewer of Television or me.

SAFETY 1^ST

 What come into your mind about the word safety first? It is a well-known fact wrote Robert Louis Stevenson “that an immense proportion of boat accident would never happen if people held the sheet (rope) in their hands instead of making it fast”. The right way to manage a sailing boat is to hold the rope that regulates the sail in your hand. It is obvious that if you do not have the control on sailing boat, if you do silly mistakes, then you may be drowned.

                                            

                      

                       Many times serious accidents and deaths happen due to carelessness and laziness. People do not think about their selves and it is surprising how careless people are in very ordinary things. Silly mistakes can often lead to serious accidents like throwing away lighted matches, filling oil-stoves or lamps when they are lighted, running across the street in front of a motor car, jumping off a train when it is moving and throwing banana skins on the floor for others to slip on. These are some of the examples.

                                            

                          So try to avoid giving examples of foolish carelessness, set the motto in your life “Safety First”, use your common sense. Do not take unnecessary risk; keep your eyes and ears open. In a word be care full, for your own sake and for the sake of others. The word “Safety First” does not meant that we must never take any risk. Sometimes your life safety is not the important thing. It is only against unnecessary and silly risks that motto of “Safety First” is aimed.

Give it a go

Here is yet another ‘philosophical go’ to the discovery of what the ‘truth’ is and what really does matter in the practical world. There is a difference between the two of them that is, truth is not necessarily important while what really matters is the practical details that are socially or widely accepted, that actually matters while, just for the opinion’s sake, locals rather go with the flow, they would rather do what is normal in the society and without caring about the harm that will mount the society by following that popular trend, that popular norm.

 We do not really want to confuse ourselves by bringing a change because we know that we do not have the iota of strength to bring change for example (as a mass communication student it is easier to quote political example while it is not really related to the topic), when Imran Khan promises to the people of Pakistan that PTI will shoot down drones once it comes in power, the people do not readily believe the details especially the politically conscious ones because America sort of controls what goes in Pakistan and people of Pakistan depress themselves by thinking that we have no strength to stand up for ourselves, we are puppets, which is sad to think as a sovereignty, as a republic. So if someone wants to bring a huge change, we think of what is widely accepted that becomes our first priority in order to ease the judgment of the circumstances.

Similarly, when a land of pure has so much dirt in it, we cannot bring about change without getting our hands dirty or (politically speaking) without getting threatened about our lives, without putting our lives in jeopardy. If we think of only community based problems we would not be able see much difference, we cannot bring about change or a girl cannot bring change without getting her hands dirty.

What is widely accepted versus the truth is the dilemma, the catch 22, the ‘no-win situation’. When I say a girl I mean a single girl going toward being married which is actually my topic. A single girl coming from a middle class family or a financially-challenged family (necessary for more trouble) going toward being married from single; the amount of burden on her for not bringing enough dowry, for not being able to afford the various marriage events that are the very norm is eternal. Here is the dowry of Bibi Fatima, daughter of Holy Prophet (S.A.W):

·         “One Armor sold for 400 or 480 or 500 Dirhams.

·          One pair of cotton Yemeni Gloves.

·          Raw and untanned hide of a goat (Manaqib Ibn Shahre-         Ashoob Vol. 3, p.351).”^[1]

We think it would be quite awkward to give a pair of gloves to the bride in 2012 which is not wrong considering how the world has changed but considering that the whole marriage institution has to be Islamic in every way possible but when it comes to the rights, we do not really care about what Islam says about humanity, we cuss the girl for not bringing enough dowry but she cannot even raise her voice saying where is Islam now? Although here is another side of the coin, some people might be wondering about the ‘mehr’ issue, sometimes the girl’s family decides a huge amount for mehr which in turn is a burden for the husband.

We are too busy in self aggrandizement that we forget about the two young people who are frightened out of their wits just to think of the amount of expense that the simple institution of marriage will bring (which does not necessarily have to if done in a proper way). What is more infuriating is the divorce ratio going up due to the girl being financially weak (concentrating on the ‘girl aspect’). What is more annoying then to kick a woman out with her kids in the middle of the night just because she was not financially strong? Here is a piece of advice for the ‘aggressive, antagonistic, self-righteous, holier-than-thou’ people out there: Once you ruin someone’s youth, once you ruin someone’s present which will haunt them by being their damaged past, you cannot bring their time back for them, you cannot bring their happiness back, you cannot bring their past back to life to redo your mistake because in life you do not get a ‘do-over’, it is one time deal so try accepting a poor girl too, here is your food for thought for the day.

NEVER LET THEM GO

Hina came back from London to Pakistan after 10 years. She has done her Post Graduation from Brunel University. Hina‘s parents is so happy to see her daughter is home as she is the only child of her parents. Hina wants to continue her career here in Pakistan by finding a suitable job for herself. As she had done her MSc in Media and Communication, so she applied for the job and she got employed in the most reputed channel of Pakistan.

One day while talking to her mother hina asked “Mama where is your old friend Ayesha? I haven’t seen her a long time ago. Had Ayesha Aunt visited our house after leaving this area?  Hina’s mother replied “I am very much worried about her. I really do not know where she is? When she leaves this area Ayesha promised me that INSHALLAH she will visit to our house. But beta she never came a single time here. ALLAH knows where she is. I always pray for her.

Next day when hina came home after her job. She looks very much stressed. When her mother asks her she cried a lot. Hina’s mother got a little bit worried, and then hina told her mother what happened why she is crying. She told her the reason that mama today my manager call me and assign a duty to me that I have to cover a program in edhi home. I got ready and reach there by time. I interviewed the caretaker of edhi home and I move on to those people who had gone through hard time. Parents, children of different ages living their just because their loved ones can’t take care of them, they can’t raise them or support them and suddenly I was shocked to see Ayesha Aunt sitting lonely there. For a minute my mind goes blind that what to say. It’s like words stuck into my mouth. My heart says that I am happy to see her, but the bitter side is that in what condition? Speechless I have seen her very much happy but now all the colors, shine vanished from her eyes. All I can see broken dreams just because their children left her in old age. I don’t know if she remembers me recognized me. But the only thing left which is emptiness in her eyes.

Moral: Never let them go gives us the moral that we all should love our parents respect them, give the comfort that they want from us in their old age. Our parents do anything for us when we were young. They watch over us in time of sickness, teach us the principles of life, and guard us from evil influences. When our parents get old they need our attention. Give them all the care they needed. Always remember when we get old the same thing if we have done with our parents will also repeat by our children. So try to finish this word old home from society.

Hadith: The reward of kindness to parents is so great that our beloved PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH) recommended it in place of Jihad. It is narrated that a man came to the Prophet asking his permission to take part in Jihad. The Prophet asked him, "Are your parents alive?" He replied in the affirmative. The Prophet said to him, "Then exert yourself in their service." (Bukhari 4.248)

Mandraja bala jumla insani fitrat ki sahe akasi karta hy kyun k insan ka kisi haal mai mutmain hona mushkil hy .Maazi , Haal , Mustakbil in teen dauron mai insani zindagi ki khani posheda hy .            Khuaish aisi karay jis ko hum pura kar sakay . Mai ye manti hon k khuaishat aur azaim jeenay ka hosla paida kartay hain lekin hamara mazhab hamein ye nahin sikhata k apni khuaishat mai apni had se guzar jaein aur apni zaroraton ko najaiz tarikon se pura karay.                                                         

           Ab sawal ye paida hota hy k insani khuaishat khatam kyun nahin hoti ?   Wo is liye kyun k insan ne apni zindagi ka masqad dunya ko bana liya hy wo ye bhool raha hy k khuaishat se bhari zindagi tou Aarzi zindagi hy , magar hamesha rehne wali zindagi tou Akhrat ki zindagi hy .

Pro Se

Every individual has their own personality, their own way of portraying themselves, their own distinctiveness which makes them, makes us, makes everyone stand out and be unique. It is a common perception that ‘everyone is an individual’ but to take it into account that every person is an individual is a completely different perception.

It is by habit that we think of ourselves first, we think of our problems first and that we are our own priority, we are all a tad selfish and that is quite natural not to mention. To be a bit of selfish is relatively natural and a deeply-ingrained part of us also necessary to move forth toward success, if we stopped doing that we would be stuck in one place, if we put others’ needs before us even when we cannot afford to we would be stuck in one place. In order to keep moving forward it is essential that we become our first priority while subsequently we should think of giving back to the community by helping the needy.

Although sometimes in the long run our proclivities influence us to tread a few people in our surroundings but we, unaware of our actions, keep on moving forth which is a foolhardy act, a hasty decision or a very proud move.

Sometimes we do not get to chose who we are such as if someone has a speech impediment they did not choose it, if someone has a learning disability they did not choose it. Similarly if someone is submissive by nature they did not choose it, if someone cannot control their temper, they did not choose it. It so happens that we as individuals are born with our own superpowers and we cannot change them they are very much embedded deep within us. But to make someone’s life a living hell just because they do not fall in the category of ‘the normal cult of society’ is again a foolhardy act, an appalling act.

It is not really up to us to decide who is perfect inside out because no one really is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, there is always room for improvement in everyone’s life and no one can be complacent enough to say that they are ‘perfect’ that they do not need to learn more, that they have all the answers. Someone can have the expertise of one subject or a few subjects but not all, a person can have full know-how of a few subjects but not all.

There is a difference between getting the chance to speak up for yourself and never getting one at all. When you get a chance to speak for yourself each day is like Christmas, Eid etc. When you have to cocoon yourself thinking that others might not agree with your opinions, with your ideas, every day is like facing an earthquake.

No one has the right to frequently give shut up calls to the ‘dumb ones’, to the submissive ones because those who do so are oblivious about what egalitarianism is. Egalitarianism is a policy, a belief that suggests that every individual is equal or according to Merriam Webster: egalitarianism is a social philosophy advocating the removal of inequalities among people.

We cannot advocate the idea of removing inequalities among us if we let others speak for themselves only, if we have to say something then it is high time that we start doing so by admitting that we are not being treated fairly and rather opposite to what we deserve.

Throughout my life I have faced so many people insulting me on my face in public without thinking for a second that they could be wrong and not me. On the other hand I accepted their treatment thinking that maybe I am not capable of making the right decision. But looking back on life I regret not standing up for myself because now I know that I was quite right on my path. So now I will always represent myself for which I will tell the dominant ones to make way because I am coming through as I have a ‘dumb notion’ of my own to represent.
